What Is Kiln-Formed Glass?
Introduction to Glass Fusing, Slumping, and Casting
Through hands on projects students will learn about glass cutting, compatibility of glass for fusing, the difference between fusing, slumping, and casting, and how different kiln firing schedules produce different results. Students will make a tac fuse/textural project, a full fused tile, and two small cast projects.
3 sessions, 2 1/2 hours each.
$90
Glass Fusing Parent/Child Workshop
Share the delight of glass fusing with your child in a comfortable home studio setting. You will learn how easy and fun it is to make projects such as small dishes and bowls, sun catchers, jewelry, glass tiles, ornaments, and more. This workshop is suitable for children eight years or older. Projects will be ready to pick up one week after the workshop. All materials included.
1 session, 2 1/2 hours.
$45 per parent/child.
$20 per additional child.
Beginning Glass Casting
Instruction and hands-on workshop activities will include making clay originals, pouring a plaster mold, "charging" the mold with glass, and kiln firing the mold. Students will make two open face molds which will be filled with glass frit and fired.
4 sessions, 2 1/2 hours each.
$120
Big Bowls
Two 16" fused bowls will be made in this class.
One will be tac fused, the other full fused. Thickness requirements, bubble reduction, functionality, and firing schedules for the big bowl will be covered. Prerequisite: "Introduction to Glass Fusing, Slumping, and Casting."
3 sessions, 2 1/2 hours each.
$120
Frit Painting Tile Class
In this class students will learn how to work with crushed glass frit to produce two 1/4" thick tiles. Firing schedules and instructions on damming the tile in the kiln will be included. If you are detail oriented, you will love this class.
4 sessions, 2 1/2 hours each.
$120
Fused Glass Ceiling Lampshades
Each student will make a 16" ceiling lampshade to replace a standard lampshade in its existing fixture. Drilling holes in glass will be covered along with slumping the shade into its form.
2 sessions, 2 1/2 hours each.
$60
Fused Glass Wall Pockets
Students will learn to work with ceramic fiber blanket to design and produce a hanging, watertight glass vessel. Drilling holes in glass and hanging the pieces will be covered. Prerequisite: "Introduction to Glass Fusing, Slumping, and Casting." 1 session, 3 hours.
$35
Art for the Soul
This experiential and experimental class uses guided meditation and full body meditation techniques to help students focus on "being in the moment" while doing art. The emphasis in this class is on the spiritual nature of creativity and how it nourishes the soul. As a final project, each student will produce a 14" fused and slumped glass mandala.
5 sessions, 3 hours each.
$65
WHAT IS KILN-FORMED GLASS?
Kiln-formed glass, also called warm glass, is the process of using the heat of a kiln to melt and shape glass. Three main types of kiln-formed glass process are:
Glass Fusing: Arranging pieces of glass together in a kiln, then melting at temperatures between 1300 to 1600 degrees fahrenheit.
Glass Slumping: Forming glass by heating it over a convex mold or into a concave mold inside a kiln. Slumping temperatures typically do not exceed 1300 degrees fahrenheit.
Glass Casting: Placing pieces of glass into a mold which is then heated in a kiln to temperatures of 1500 to 1600 degrees fahrenheit.
